KINGSNORTH Port, near Strood, could benefit from an £8.5 million scheme to divert heavy loads from Kent's road.

The Department of Transport is looking to launch a multi-purpose platoon (MPP) to carry large loads over waterways to relieve pressure on motorways and roads.

And the DoT expects the port of Kingsnorth, along with Dover and Gravesend, to benefit from the scheme in future.

Shipping minister, David Jamieson, said: "I am delighted to announce a practical measure that will lead to a real reduction in the mileage abnormal indivisible loads travel on our roads. It will mean fewer hold-ups for drivers when these loads are involved."

The money for the scheme comes in the form of an £8.5 million freight facilities grant, which will go towards the cost of the pontoon.

The MPP, which will be ready by 2004, will be capable of operating at sea and on larger inland waterways and carry single loads of up to 1,200 tonnes.
