The port of Ramsgate is to get another continental crossing, with Euroferries unexpectedly announcing the launch of a new service to Boulogne-sur-Mer.

The route, which will accomodate cars, coaches and foot passengers, is expected to begin in the spring.

Ferry crossings between Ramsgate and the French port will take just 75 minutes, with passengers able to use an onboard duty free shopping area, restaurants and first class seating.

South Thanet MP Steve Ladyman welcomed the news, saying it increased the viability of Ramsgate to serve as a major international port.

Dr Ladyman, himself a former transport minster, said: "The idea is for the port to become a credible alternative to places like Dover and this news greatly increases its potential going into the future.

"Of course it's not just great news for the port but also for Thanet businesses, especially local hoteliers, who stand to benefit enormously."

Dr Ladyman added that the infrastructure for the Ramsgate-Boulogne service is already in place, with only "minor improvements" to passenger access required.

Euroferries plans to run express coaches from the port of Ramsgate to major south east destinations including London, Canterbury and the Medway Towns. The coach service would also link the port directly to 2012 Olympic venues.

The company is expected to unveil further details about its proposals, including timetables, in the coming months.
