TWO jobs are to go and two bosses are given regional roles in a shake-up at Invicta Radio in Whitstable. Capital Radio, owner of Invicta FM and Invicta Gold, is streamlining the business into four specialist areas and several station chiefs have lost their existing jobs, including Whitstable-based station director Penny Williams and sales director Mike Huston.
However, Mrs Williams and Mr Huston have moved to new senior jobs in the group. Mrs Williams becomes regional marketing operations director, still based at Whitstable, and Mr Huston becomes regional sales director. The move involves a shakeup up local advertising teams, with more sales activity switched to Capital's regional hubs in London, Manchester and Birmingham. The two jobs to go are in the sales and marketing departments.
According to radio insiders, the move has been prompted by changes in the broadcasting scene, including the introduction of a new Communications Bill. They claim that Capital is gearing up for a possible merger or acquisition. Paul Davies, Capital Radio's operations director, insisted the decision did not weaken the company's commitment to Kent.
"This move in no way suggests a decline in Capital's commitment to broadcasting in Kent," he said. "Invicta FM covers one of our strongest broadcasting areas and we remain dedicated to ensuring the station's future success by keeping it locally driven."
The changes would have no impact on programmes, and listeners would not notice any difference. Invicta would "benefit from enhanced resources and direct specialist support from within the Capital Group”. He said: "The management restructure will simply give us more commercial edge and help us to take advantage of any opportunities that arise, not least the exciting acquisition prospects that will be created by deregulation of the UK media industry."
