MORE than 40 hi-tech science companies could be on their way to Kent if plans by Kent Science Park are approved.
The Sittingbourne-based science park has submitted proposals to Swale council to refurbish 20,000 sq ft of laboratory space and scientific facilities at the site.
If approved the refurbishment will provide an important space for more hi-tech, innovative businesses to develop in Kent.
Speaking to the Kent Messenger Group in June, Dr John Dodd, director of Sittingbourne Enterprise Hub, said Kent must encourage such areas if the economy and job prospects were to thrive.
Other countries, he said, were starting to take the lead in research and innovation and Kent must nurture businesses which could attract a new generation of workers.
The planned Bio-Acclerator complex will offer accommodation for 44 businesses. It is due to be completed by the end of 2006 when it will form part of the Science Park’s BioHatchery project.
In partnership with the University of Kent and SEEDA (South East England Development Agency), the BioHatchery will stimulate the growth of new businesses by matching the university’s research capabilities with the accommodation and business support new companies need.
Nick Sharp, site director at Kent Science Park, said: "Kent has a burgeoning knowledge economy and for high-growth businesses to succeed and remain in the county, high quality facilities and cost- effective premises are vital.
"This major refurbishment offers huge potential for both UK and international scientific companies looking for the right location.
"It will strengthen Kent Science Park’s position as a centre of excellence in which hi-tech and knowledge companies can thrive."
Paul Wookey, chief executive of Locate in Kent, added: "Kent Science Park has always been attractive to small and medium-sized science-based companies due to the availability of reasonably priced laboratories with the all important space to grow, as well as the opportunity to work alongside other like-minded companies.
"The new facility epitomises what Kent needs if it is to stimulate ambitious technology-led companies."
