A leading fetal medicine expert who specialises in the prediction and prevention of pregnancy complications – including stillbirth and pre-eclampsia - has opened a new private clinic for expectant mothers in Kent.
The Pregnancy Clinic, led by Professor Ranjit Akolekar, is opening its doors in Sevenoaks with the aim of detecting and preventing some of the problems which can lead to 2,500 stillbirth deaths every year in the UK.
Professor Akolekar, who is a specialist consultant in fetal medicine and obstetrics at the Medway Fetal and Maternal Medicine Centre, believes more can be done to prevent these tragic deaths. He offers scans and tests currently unavailable to most pregnant women on the NHS.
"The common factors for stillbirth are problems with the placenta, umbilical cord, birth defects and prematurity and the most common of these – causing a third of all stillbirths –
relates to problems with the placenta," says Professor Akolekar.
"Yet a large proportion of these - potentially 400-500 babies a year - could be saved through effective screening, just for problems relating to the placenta alone."
The Pregnancy Clinic is based in Sevenoaks and offers a range of ultrasound scans for mothers-to-be.
"The Pregnancy Clinic offers specialist, high-quality care to expectant mothers to ensure they get the best possible advice and support for their pregnancy. the ambition is to provide
parents with accurate evidence-based information about the health and well-being of both babies as well as mothers," adds Professor Akolekar.
Flexible appointments for tests and scans are available including evenings and weekends. Prices start from £100.
