Discount supermarket giant Aldi has signed a deal to buy one million stalks of rhubarb from a Maidstone supplier.
It has struck the agreement for forced rhubarb from Farm Fresh PO (Producers Organisation) which promotes local growers and suppliers.
Initially being sold as a 'specially selected' items in some stores across the country from early March, if it proves a hit with shoppers it could be rolled out nationwide.
It comes after the closure of restaurants as a result of the lockdowns has seen rhubarb growers seek alternative ways to sell their produce.
Based in Maidstone, Farm Fresh PO is an organisation made up of several UK growers. The supplier has worked with Aldi for eight years, providing a range of fresh produce, including asparagus, strawberries and green beans.
Scott Woolford, business development manager for Farm Fresh PO, which is based at Turkey Mill, said: “Like many other suppliers of forced rhubarb, we could experience decreased demand this season as hospitality venues remain closed.
"Although we’ve still been able to sell some of our produce locally, working with Aldi has provided us with a welcome increased supply platform to attract new customers and ensure more UK consumers are aware of this great product.
“We are grateful to Aldi for its long-term commitment and ongoing support of Farm Fresh PO. The partnership gives us the confidence to keep investing in our business and we look forward to expanding even further over the next few years with Aldi’s support."
Forced rhubarb season runs from January to March and sees growers cover the young stems to prevent light reaching the plant, forcing the fruit to develop early in search of sunlight.
It's seen as a delicacy due to its softer texture.
