Thanet looks to Europe for tourism boost

THANET could receive another round of European funding for its tourism industry.

So far the district council has secured three bids worth more than £1.2 million from the European Regional Development Fund, which has been distributed locally through the Tourism Grant Scheme.

The money has helped upgrade tourist accommodation and local visitor attractions. More than 75 businesses have received grants and six new properties, including hotels, self-catering and guest house accommodation, have opened since the scheme began distributing funds in 1998.

If the council's fourth application is successful, the grant from Europe could be worth around £200,000, giving more tourist attractions and accommodation providers the chance to secure up to 30% towards improvement costs.

The council has written to local businesses asking for their expressions of interest in the scheme.

To make an application for funding or for more information, contact Neil McCollum, council tourism manager, 01843 577039 or e-mail neil.mccollum@thanet.gov.uk before Monday, February 10.
