Truck stop could ease Dover gridlocks

A FREIGHT company could be the answer to Dover's traffic problems, offering a truck stop on its Whitfield site.

Priority Freight moved its Europe-wide express delivery service from Lydden Hill to the Port Zone at Old Park, where it has nearly three acres of land.

"We needed somewhere bigger and this site at Old Park was ideal," said managing director Neal Williams.

"We believe we can help ease the pressure on Dover by parking more than 120 lorries on our land. We hope to be having talks with the various authorities soon about moving the stacking system away from the town."

The offer comes less than two weeks after Dover was gridlocked by cars and lorries which had to queue for up to five hours to reach the docks.

"Dover's traffic problems are not just local news but are being talked about throughout the country," said Mr Williams. "It has made headlines in the national freight transport magazines, and drivers are asking when something will be done to improve the situation."

Police are aware of the company's plans, and it has spoken to Dover Harbour Board.

"We know the truck stop at the Eastern Docks is due to close in August, so this facility could be invaluable," Mr Williams added.
