SPECIALIST advice and funding is available for people in Thanet wanting to set up their own businesses. The next intake of students is being invited for the New Enterprise Scholarship Scheme, which provides training, counselling, and financial support of up to £3,500 for would-be entrepreneurs in the south east.
The government funded scheme, which starts on September 25, lasts approximately six months and is run by the Enterprise Agency of East Kent, the Prince's Trust and Canterbury Business School. Among successful trainees are Jackie Twells, of Margate, who specialises in cosmetic, fashion, bridal and casualty make-up.
She regularly attends courses for trainee doctors at the Queen Mother hospital, Margate, where she simulates post-accident open wounds, gashes and bruises on 'victims’. She said: "The NES course is really helpful. It gives you a great deal of confidence as well as loads of business know-how."
Teresa O'Connor, of Margate, aims to set up a removal firm with fully trained British Association of Removers personnel after completing her course. She said: "The NES course teaches you everything you need to know about business in a very practical, hands-on way. It is well worth it even without receiving any money at the end of it."
The scheme is open to anyone over 18, not in full-time education and living in parts of Thanet. More details from Janice Sandwell on 01843 233420.
