NEW fixed term employee regulations coming into force on July 10 are the topic for a forum organised by Ashford Chamber of Commerce. The new rights for workers on fixed term contracts will have a major impact on business in the UK.
The breakfast forum, on May 23 at the Chamber's offices, will be hosted by Employment Relations Solicitors, of Elham. Also under discussion will be the Temporary Workers' Directive, published by the EU on March 20 in draft form.
Tony Bertin, of Employment Relations - who will be speaking at the event - says: "The Directive should act as a wake-up call to British industry. Although the Directive is at a very early stage, it is important that commerce should respond vigorously to proposals and ensure that any legislation coming out of Brussels takes real account of the concerns of the business community in the UK."
The aim of the Directive is to give temporary workers the same pay and benefits as permanent staff. Mr Bertin warns, however, that students looking for summer work may find it almost impossible to find temporary work."It could also have a serious impact on the tourism industry across Europe," he says.
