When it comes to looking after our cars, most of us think of the odd car wash visit and routine MOT.
But do you know about the importance of car detailing?
As most of us know, a lot of work goes into maintaining a car but it’s not just about brake tests, tyre changes and oil checks.
Giving your car that perfect shine is not simply a luxury afforded exclusively for motoring enthusiasts or the wealthy.
Apart from getting your ride to look almost as good as new, it also makes your car look as clean as possible, both inside and out.
That means your car looks great and, perhaps more importantly, is healthier for you and your passengers.
“The core term ‘detailing’ is very much about the aesthetics of the car but in the process we are removing contamination from the paint, trims, glass and wheels,” said Douglas White, who is the managing director of Your Coachman - a Maidstone-based company offering expert vehicle detailing and paint protection services.
“The contaminants can cause damage over time to the finish of the vehicle.

“After detailing most customers have some form of protection applied to the car; this can be a coating or a paint protection film.
“These add an extra layer of protection to the vehicle and lock in the gloss that the polishing part of detailing has built up.”
The team at Coachman use a range of polishing machines which then have various foam, wool or microfibre pads attached to them.
An abrasive polishing compound in paste form is then used to polish away swirl marks, fine scratches and holograms and that’s followed by a very fine polish to build up a deep gloss.
“This is a real gloss and not the result of putting on a shine with a coating,” added Douglas.
“The trick is to find the correct combination of pad and polish for the particular paint on the vehicle; some are very hard paints whilst others can be very soft and thin.
“This process can take between one and four days depending on the extent and complexity of the project.”
Coachman is not your normal run of the mill vehicle detailing firm.

Douglas and his team operate from a large site with plenty of capacity to work and which also allows vehicles to sit whilst coatings and films cure in the right temperatures before being put back on the road.
All cars are washed indoors in a controlled wash bay environment so they are always washed properly without the need to rush in bad weather. There is also a comfortable space for customers to wait whilst work is being done on their cars.
“We’re quite unique when compared to other vehicle detailing companies in that we are also a manufacturer of protective coatings and polishes in our sister company Zertona,” he said.
“This gives us a deep understanding in this area and also the ability to accurately match the right product to best suit the vehicle and the use it is being put to.”
Business may be good at Coachman but that doesn’t mean that they will be resting on their laurels.
Plans are already in place to expand their existing customer base ahead of the summer and the return of sunnier days when more people and their cars will be wanting to look their best.
“We are also planning on some special customer social events for summer including karting and motor racing,” continued Douglas.
“When you collect your car, it’s just the beginning of your experience with Coachman, not the end.
“There are some additional services under investigation but they are secret for now…..”
