World class marina gets the vote

A WORLD class marina complex is the best way forward for the development of Ramsgate's Royal Harbour, according to Thanet council. The plan would create a number of attractions around the waterfront, turning the area into a major visitor destination, with improved links directing visitors into the town centre.

It is the preferred option of Thanet councillors for the rejuvenation of the harbour and would include a high profile tourist attraction, a residential community and be themed to highlight Thanet's history and heritage. Expansion of the marina and the port are included in the project, which the council says will attract "identifiable funding sources and commercial development opportunities".

Two other proposals received less support. They were for a 24-hour operational port, or a 'new millennium community', which was mainly residential. Cllr. Paul Rollins, cabinet member for regeneration, said: "Ramsgate waterfront has already attracted interest from developers and now we need to put in place a flexible planning framework, so potential investors know how the site is likely to develop.

"As well as the Royal Harbour, Ramsgate has a wealth of historic buildings and a rich nautical history and by building on these assets, I believe we can use this important site to help the regeneration of the town and to attract more visitors to the area".
