A TEAM of six police officers who have been patrolling Chatham High Street in a bid to curb anti-social behaviour have made 30 arrests in their fist month.

The crime-busting squad have also confiscated alcohol from 161 people in an effort to enforce the alcohol control zone. In addition to this they have issued a total of 35 fines of £80 to people who have been acting in a disorderly way.

Since Tuesday, May 8, the officers have been a regular presence in the town where they have made time to engage with traders and meet shoppers in a crime-prevention road show that was held at the Pentagon Shopping Centre last week.

Team member, PC Adam Stent, said: "Chatham town centre is a vibrant place with a lot on offer for shoppers. Our job is to ensure that those looking to enjoy the facilities are able to do so in an environment where they can feel safe.

"I believe that this regular police presence is not only reassuring to the people in the town, but also acts as a deterrent to those who seek to upset others by acting anti-socially.

"Myself and my team are committed to making Chatham town centre safer and will continue to robustly enforce the alcohol control zone. We are all looking forward to plodding the High Street beat over the coming months.’

Ch Insp Des Keers, who has been heading the initiative, said: "This team have proven to be an effective crime-fighting unit and the results speak for themselves. I am delighted that this proactive action is working and am certain that the team will continue to be successful."
