FOUR firefighters had to be taken to hospital when two of their engines collided as they responded to an emergency call.

The accident happened at about 6.30pm on Tuesday as two pumps were called to attend a rubbish fire in Chatham.

It is thought the accident happened when one of the vehicles was forced to brake suddenly.

Eye-witnesses said the ladders on top of the front engine plunged through the window of the fire vehicle behind as the vehicles were at Luton Arches.

Four firefighters from Medway Fire Station were taken to hospital suffering from whiplash and shock but were sent home later that evening.

Another fire crew from Chatham was sent to the fire, in White Road.
