Forty-five parks in Kent have been named as some of the best-kept outdoor spaces in the country, as they are awarded Green Flag status.

The title sets the benchmark standard for the management of recreational outdoor spaces across the UK and is given out by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy.

Some of Kent’s winners include Mote Park in Maidstone, Samphire Hoe in Dover, Leybourne Lakes Country Park and Reculver Country Park, near Herne Bay.

The charity hands out the awards based on nominations from local authorities.

As well as the Green Flag Award, five Kent parks have also held on to their Green Heritage Site Accreditations.

These are The Great Lines Heritage Park in Gillingham, Oare Gunpowder Works in Faversham, Ellington Park in Ramsgate and Dunorlan Park as well as Grosvenor and Hilbert Park in Tunbridge Wells.

Five outdoor spaces have also won a Green Flag Community Award which is given to sites that look for ways to encompass the local community.

This accolade was given to Bearsted Woodland Trust in Maidstone, Abbey Physic Community Garden in Faversham, Hythe Green, Love Hambrook Marshes in Canterbury and the Bob Fowler Community Allotment in Sittingbourne.

The county's 45 Green Flag parks are some of 184 across the South East to be awarded this year.
