Around 500 fish have been killed on a lake near Hythe.

Environment Agency teams are pumping oxygen into the privately-owned Palmarsh Fishery to try and save the remaining fish and eels.

The agency was called to the 55 acre lake on Monday following reports of hundreds of dead fish.

Samples have been taken of the water to try to establish the exact cause of the fish deaths.

Myles Robinson, fisheries technical officer for the Environment Agency, said: “It’s always devastating when fish die on this scale and we are working closely with the fishery owner to try and figure out exactly what happened.

“We are working to boost oxygen levels in the lake to give remaining fish a better chance of survival and will continue investigating the cause of this incident.”

Anyone seeing fish in distress should contact the EA’s incident hotline 0800 80 70 60.
