Knowing the name of the secretary of state for health proved the most important question at this year’s Canterbury KM Big Quiz.

A grand total of 50 teams battled it out at the Kent University sports centre on Friday night in a fiercely contested event which, after six testing rounds, came down to a nail-biting tie breaker.

Steve Lilley, captain of winners The Barking Spiders, was quicker off the mark with the answer of Andrew Lansley.

The Big Quiz regulars from The Unicorn pub in St Dunstan’s defended their title by narrowly beating runners-up The Moomins.

Both teams finished joint top after six rounds with 60 points and qualify for the county finals later this year at the Ashford International Hotel.

The team from the Bonny Cravat pub in Woodchurch, near Ashford, finished third with 58 points.

On the night, more than £8,000 was raised for the Kentish Gazette and kmfm’s charity of the year The East Kent Breast Cancer Mammography Appeal along with the Lady Mayoress of Canterbury’s Charity Appeal and the KM Charity Team’s children’s road safety services.

Money raised from charity glass sales and raffle, just under £3,000, was matched by sponsors Barclays.

The event was also supported by Shepherd Neame, Kent University Sports Hall, The Cuban restaurant, Medirest, Independent Music Productions, P&0 Ferries and The League of Friends of Kent and Canterbury Hospital.

Sponsorship was also provided by Downland Cycles, Larkings and Whitefriars. Adecco provided waitresses and runners to ensure the event went smoothly.
