We have a lot of greyhounds at any one time on our racing strength but from among the masses, you always have that enigmatic character who race followers seem to have that little bit of extra affection for.

Newlawn Sweep is probably the most popular dog racing here currently and I have often mentioned him in this column. He is now fast approaching retirement being just one of a handful of dogs to have achieved the 200-race mark.

Could it be, though, that we have a timely replacement in kennel-mate Picturenosound who has been showing a style of running that you would only associate with Sweep.

Sweep’s racing style is quite simple – you decide not to come out of the traps until everyone else has had a head start and then you go after them. Amazingly, if you are him, you can still win from that disadvantaged position even over just 380 metres but you have to be a little special to do so. That’s Sweep for you.

Picturenosound, like Sweep, is trained by Patsy Cusack and the former’s win a week ago will have put a smile on his trainer’s face as he put in a performance that even Sweep would have been proud of.

You do not get much chance to improve your position over a distance as short as 380m but clearly Picturenosound has been oblivious to this fact as he has fallen out of the traps plum last on most occasions to date.

Last around the first two bends, last down the back straight, fourth into the home straight and first across the line!

Undoubtedly, the performance of the week and although it pains me somewhat to have to report this, as my own dog was in contention to win the race, fair play to a dog who could be our next super-hero.

Two wins on the bounce now, this is getting serious. I will keep you informed of his future exploits.

My one for you to follow this week is Kilahara Robin who has won her first two career races here in good style. She has yet to be headed in a race having put in two perfect trap-to-line performances in times of 24.03 and 24.01 seconds respectively.

Wins then now in grades A7 and A6 so is she good enough to win at the next level?

She would probably have to find a little more time on the clock but is full of confidence and improving, so a hat-trick could well be a realistic possibility. Expect decent odds when she runs next.
