The first two Owners Bonus Series final races were run on last Friday evening’s card which resulted in wins for Ardera Hats in grade A6 and Broadtown Paxo in grade S4.
Trained by Pat Thompson and Julie Luckhurst respectively, both greyhounds landed the £500 winners’ prize whilst the other runners each received £100.
There are 650 such races being staged around all the GBGB registered tracks in the UK during the coming months and the next such event here will be on this Friday evening’s and Saturday morning cards when the finalists in grades A5 and A4 will go to traps.
The two heats winners in the A5 races saw both Fast Trapper and Carden Mary recording exactly the same times of 24.23 seconds so we can take it that the final this weekend is going to be a close run affair.
Furthermore, the dogs in each heat that finished third to also go through finished within three lengths of the race winners so the final gives all six dogs a chance on paper. Not one to sit on the fence I have to make a selection despite this being a tricky one to call.
I like Fast Trapper who comes into this final having won her last three starts. Two of those were over 540 metres so with this race being over 380 metres she will be finishing strongly.
There are plenty of dangers but I fancy that her main challenge may come from Carden Mary. In the A4 final Fawham Veri has a slight advantage on the clock as the fastest of the two heat winners. Having said that he enjoyed a trouble free run to record a time of 23.84 seconds. Altamount Lass, who won the other heat, registered 23.94 but came from a starting position of fifth away from the traps to get up to win.
Like Fast Trapper she has won her last three races and is the logical choice therefore given that this time she enjoys any sort of clear run.
Last week’s selection Tictac Tyson was desperately unlucky to lose by a half a length. Had he trapped well he would have won, so I will stay loyal to him and hope that he goes one better this week.
