The Met Office has warned that road, rail, air and ferry services are likely to be affected, with longer journey times and cancellations to be expected.
There is also a possibility of some damage to buildings, such as tiles being blown from roofs; flying debris is also likely which could lead to injuries.
Those on the coasts should also be wary of large waves and beach material being thrown onto coastal roads, sea fronts and properties.
There is a good chance that power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage.
The warning will be in place from 10pm on Boxing Day, until 9am the following morning.
