A paramedic suffered a back injury after a car - said to be travelling the wrong way along Sittingbourne High Street - crashed into an ambulance.

Police closed the one-way road to traffic after they were called to the incident, close to the NatWest at around 9pm on Friday.

It is understood the stationary ambulance was hit by a white Volkswagen Golf while attending an emergency at a private address in the High Street. The road was reopened at 10.15pm.

Two men were arrested at the scene and taken into custody.

An ambulance service spokesman said: "Another ambulance was sent to the scene and a patient was taken to hospital for the original reason of their call.

"One member of staff suffered lower back pain as a result of the collision. They did not require hospital treatment."

A 23-year-old Sittingbourne man, charged with dangerous driving, is due to appear at Maidstone Magistrates’ Court on August 30. A man arrested on suspicion of theft of a vehicle, was released without charge.
