Review: Webb Sisters, Otford's St Bartholomew's Church, Wednesday, December 14

Kent's own Webb Sisters were given a deserved standing ovation at the end of their first home county gig since their triumphant world tour with Leonard Cohen.

The surprising choice of St Bartholomew's Church in Otford, proved inspired.

The candlelit venue created a magical atmosphere that enhanced the girls' mainly wistful songs. But, joined by talented brother Brad - Jamie Cullum's percussion man - they injected pace and zing into several numbers, including one by Johnny Cash.

Hattie - on mandolin and harp - and Charley - on guitar - ended a riveting 90-minute session with two song from the aisle, their faces illuminated only by a tiny candle flame. It was brave, delightful and special. They then took time out to talk to fans, some of whom had travelled from as far as France, Germany and County Durham.

The Webbs - managed by 60s singing star Peter Asher - are gathering an international following. This memorable performance - like previous ones on their UK tour - can only accelerate that momentum.

Folkestone's singer-songwriter Louise Orfila provided an ideal curtain-raiser in a gig promoted by Brandywine Music of Sevenoaks. The Albion Christmas Band - also their promotion - will be at St Edith Hall, Kemsing, on Monday, December 19. Tickets from 01732 440470.
