The name on everybody’s lips is Powerfast Pigeon, trained by Crayford trainer Barry O’Sullivan.

I featured the dog here recently when she competed in the J.B Riney Boxing Day Marathon at Crayford when she ran against established staying star Ministry Magpie.

On that occasion she lost to Magpie by just three quarters of a length after the pair ran a tremendous neck-to-neck race over the last 400-metres. This followed on from their previous meeting at Wimbledon over 894m when Pigeon finished in front of her rival.

Clearly, Powerfast Pigeon is about to become a star over marathon distances and certainly when the trip is around the 890m mark.

It is always nice to have one of our dogs mixing it with the big guns and in Pigeon we have a greyhound that is set to figure in this year’s top Marathon races.

Keep an eye open for her on both our live race meetings from the track on Saturday evenings on Sky 231 and freesat 402, as well as on meetings at other tracks covered by Sky Sports.

I will be looking for Said Moon and Inishowen Light to go one place better during the coming week after both were beaten by narrow margins here during their last outings.

Said Moon was 5/2 favourite in her A6 race a week ago and having made the perfect start to lead away from the traps, she looked all over a winner until caught in the final couple of strides.

She lost by just three quarters of a length and this was a good performance as she had been upgraded having won in grade A7 in her previous race. Her supporters will be looking to gain some quick recompense for her defeat and she looks capable of coming up with the goods.

Inishowen Light had identical circumstances to Moon when also dictating affairs early on to lose by the same small margin. Light is a dog who has won before at A6 level so there is no doubt that in the right company his current A8 grade is well within his scope.

Both dogs have had more than 100 career races so they know what to do. One to watch for me is newcomer Catunda Florence. At just 16 months of age, she won just her second career race here at the weekend in a time of 24.19 seconds in bottom grade A8. Despite giving ground away by running wide from trap six, she finished over a length ahead of the field and her win time says that it will not take her long to win an A7 race.
