Only one of last week’s column selections ran on the first live televised evening card here last Saturday but there was no stopping old timer Kauri Blue as he put in a late run to win at odds of 3-1.

He was impressive in moving through the field from fourth place early on to get up on the line to beat Aero Vegas by just a short head.

The kennel mates made it a one-two for trainer Julie Luckhurst and the pair look set to dominate affairs over the hurdles here over the winter months. There seems little to choose between them and the formbook shows that Aero beat Kauri when they met previously on October 28. Look out for them in both graded and open races here.

Born Phanter has made an excellent start to her career here, finishing second in her debut race followed by a five-length win in grade A6 over 380m last week.

This was one of those performances where you have to read between the lines. She recorded a win time of 23.83sec after being bumped on the run to the first bend but showed enough determination to take up the lead at 100m from home and then eased away from her opposition.

In comparison on the same card, an A4 race was won in a time of 23.82sec by a dog that had an easier race, so logically the clock says that Phanter can win an A5 race next time. We will see but there is every reason to be optimistic.

It is always dangerous to let your heart rule over your head when looking for winners. Having said that, those that I have a soft spot for have never let me down so there is always a case for knowing your dogs as individuals and what they are capable of at their best.

Earth Skanti has been one of those dogs that I have had on my list for some time now and I love watching her run over 714m in particular.

She won at 6-1 at the weekend over that trip by four-and-a-half-lengths. In my estimation, that was a sound performance so I am surprised that the bookmakers thought her chance was so slim given their starting odds.

My advice is never be put off by the prices on dogs that you know have a realistic chance, they will repay your faith across the board.

There are many such greyhounds on my list but this week I would like to recommend that you look out for Fast Fit Elin, Jiggle Wiggle and Silveriverfeale.
