Having finished second in her last four races, it must now be time for Effernogue Biddy to go one better and register the win she deserves.

While she has never been one of the quickest away from the traps, she seems recently to have completely lost her way when the traps open.

Her record shows two missed breaks and a slow away against her last three runs, so I am hoping that she will get at least a level break on her re-appearance, which would be enough in my book for her to land the spoils. You can’t fault her for effort so let’s hope that she gets her just reward.

One of the best performances of the week came from Crossfield Totti in an S4 race over 540 metres. I was aware from the dog’s connections that they had expected their dog to put in a big run at some point so they would not have been surprised at his

10-and-a-quarter-length win in an excellent time of 34.45 seconds.

The dog was subsequently upgraded to S3 and did well to run second to seasoned campaigner Newlawn Sweep.

To put things in perspective, this was only Totti’s seventh career race while local favourite Sweep was winning for the 35th time in his 176th race.

So, no disgrace in defeat on this occasion and Totti looks good enough to win in this grade soon.

Keep an eye also on Black Hammy who won her first race here since January at the weekend.

She has had a couple of enforced breaks from racing as a result of seasonal rest and then kennel cough but clearly she is now back to somewhere near to her best. She is a previous winner at A2 level so give her due consideration when she reappears in an A3 race, as is expected.

Margan Sugar Pie will be going for the hat-trick of wins next time in top grade A1.

She is on her day arguably the best sprinter that we have and in her current frame of mind, it’s more than likely that she will complete the treble.
