There is only one place to start this week’s column and that is with the news that Tictac Tyson trained by Jean Liles became the first greyhound, since the current track was opened in 1986, to go under the 23-second barrier in a 380m race.

The track record of 23.01, set on September 27, 2003 by Kingdom Club, was improved by half a length in running by Tyson as the clock showed his win time as 22.97 when he crossed the line to smash the record.

The dog was racing at Shelbourne Park in Ireland in late September prior to joining Crayford trainer Liles kennels.

His career started here in a top grade A1 race and he has now raced in nine open races at various other tracks since his arrival from across the water.

Whelped in March 2009, the dog has only just lost his puppy status so he looks to have a great future ahead of him.

When you consider the quality of greyhounds that visit Crayford from all over the country to compete in open races, this record is no mean feat and who is to say that it may take another decade to now better Tyson’s time.

What will always remain on his CV is the fact that he was the first to break that landmark 23 seconds barrier.

Back down to earth now, in the search for more winners this week. The dogs in form and currently looking for the hat-trick of wins are Nanny Hi Hills, Lasey Potatoes and Bigwood Sarah. Which is most likely to succeed?

My money would be on Nanny Hi Hills, who I expected to rise up through the grades as a result of his excellent early pace away from the traps. Nine races so far, four wins, and now up to grade A3 next time having started at A7 level.

While Tictac Tyson has grabbed the headlines for trainer Jean Liles, look out for kennel-mate Newmarket Ace who won his first race here for her, in an open, last weekend.
