Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler could name a stronger than expected team for their midweek Johnstone’s Paint Trophy clash on Tuesday evening.

The Gills host fellow League 2 side Barnet at Priestfield for the second round tie.

Hessenthaler (pictured) was frustrated with the performance at AFC Wimbledon and could use the match to try and get things right ahead of this Saturday’s clash with Port Vale.

"There will be some players I will play because they need a kick up the backside," admitted Hessenthaler.

Charlie Lee will definitely be absent as he is suspended after picking up his fifth booking of the season at AFC Wimbledon.

Matt Fish has picked up a black eye but is still fit to play although the likes of Danny Spiller, Jack Payne and Barry Fuller remain doubtful.

New signing Joe Carter could make his debut but Hessenthaler needs to be mindful that the competition’s regulations state clubs must not name an overly-weak team.

"He (Carter) will come into contention but we can only make a few changes," added Hessenthaler.

One player hoping to get game-time is fellow newcomer Jo Kuffour.

The striker said: "It’s another game for me to get back in action. I have missed a lot of games and I am looking forward to Tuesday’s game if selected."

The match kicks-off at 7pm.
