First there was surprise.

Then there was anger. Now that has turned to ridicule!

The five shortlisted designs for the Ebbsfleet monument - or Angel of the South - have caused uproar both in Kent and across the world.

Launched last month, the shortlisted options for the £2m sculpture were fanfared as designs for the future.

However, the five alternative works by major international artists were met with opposition from locals.

In a Kentonline poll which asked readers which option they liked, "none of the above" came out on top.

Now an anonymous email is doing the rounds, making fun out of three of the designs.

Against a backdrop of Christopher le Brun's wing and disc design, the un-named comic warns of low-flying birds.

The second "postcard" appears overlaid on Daniel Buren's tower design, making it appear like a Chinese takeaway's pagoda.

The third image is not for publishing, but is based on artist Mark Wallinger's horse design - 33 times lifesize, and larger than the Statue of Liberty.

The landmark was designed to be a symbol of the new development of Ebbsfleet Valley which is to be transformed in the coming years into a new community of up to 10,000 homes together with open space, parkland, office, retail and community facilities.

The artists' designs went on display in Bluewater shopping centre.
