Appeal after knife attack in bar
Published: 00:00, 27 December 2002
A 24-year-old man suffered serious injuries to his hand in a random knife attack. The victim and a friend were in Havana’s bar on Harbour Parade, Ramsgate, at about 10.30pm on Friday.
He was standing at the bar when someone bumped into him. This man apologised to the victim but, soon afterwards, assaulted him. The victim suffered a cut to his neck and stepped back from the suspect who attempted to hit him again.
The victim then noticed the other man was holding what looked like a six-inch blade. A struggle broke out, and the victim grabbed the blade, which was then pulled out of his hand.
He suffered severe cuts to the tendons between his thumb and forefinger and a severed artery and needed 12 stitches. The suspect ran from the pub and up Albion Hill towards the Eastcliff area.
He is described as white, aged 30-35 years, 5ft 10in tall and stocky. He had short, receding, mousy brown hair and wore a blue shirt.
Witnesses in the bar said he had referred to himself as Darren earlier in the evening, and a friend with him is believed to be called Jed. There is a possibility that “Darren” has facial injuries as friends of the victim are thought to have kicked him during the struggle.
DC Ray Butterwick would like to hear from witnesses to this incident or anyone who has any other information. DC Butterwick said: “It’s obvious this man is dangerous by the fact he took a knife with him on a night out. It was fortunate that the cut to the neck wasn’t severe, or we could have been dealing with a fatality."
“We hope that from the description, friends or relatives can identify him. We would also like to hear from his friend, who we think is called Jed, to eliminate him from the enquiry.”
DC Ray Butterwick can be contacted at Margate Police Station on (01843) 222 136.
