Armour enjoys golf away-day

KENT boxer Johnny Armour took time out from his WBU title preparations by playing in a celebrity-amateur golf competition at Allhallows, near Rochester.

The Chatham fighter, set to face Nathan Sting on July 5 at Brentwood Leisure Centre, says it was good to take a break from training.

He added: “I asked the trainer if I could get away for one day and he let me come down as long as I stayed on my diet and drank lots of water. I don't play golf too often but I do enjoy it."

In the competition, which celebrated the opening of a bar at the par-3 course, Armour was unsuccessful as former world snooker champion Ken Doherty claimed the top prize.

The Irishman, who defeated a field that included former world champion boxers John Conteh and John H Stracey, Gillingham goalkeeper Jason Brown and darts player Andy Fordham, is enjoying the summer.

Doherty said: “The new season doesn’t start until August, so I can work on the golf handicap before then.”
