Two young men were arrested after a police officer was kicked and punched in an unprovoked street attack outside a Tunbridge Wells nightclub.

The officer was taking details from witnesses about an earlier incident near El Mono nightclub in Calverley Road on Saturday night when he was surrounded by a group of people before being pushed to the ground and attacked by at least two of the gang.

Due to his protective clothing, the victim suffered only bruising. A 20-year-old man from Tunbridge Wells and a 22-year-old man from Heathfield were arrested and bailed in connection with the assault.

Tunbridge Wells district chief inspector Martin Wilson has thanked a doorman from the nightclub and a taxi driver who stepped in to help the officer.

He said: "The officer and all his colleagues are very grateful to those who stepped in and helped. The attack was unprovoked and not at all representative of the people officers usually encounter when on duty at night in the town."

Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses to come forward. Anyone with information is urged to contact police on 01732 379217 or Kent Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
