TWO men have been arrested and body armour found after a police raid on a travellers' site early today.

A 27-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and a 38-year-old man for suspected possession of amphetamines.

Officers from the Metropolitan Police's armed CO19 service stormed the site in Powerscroft Road, Foots Cray, at about 4am, focusing on three of the plots.

The raid was in response to intelligence work carried out after a shooting outside the Three Blackbirds pub in Blendon Road, Bexley, last month.

About 100 officers took part in the raid, which involved a number of organisations. A specialist search is continuing at the site.

Ch Insp Chris Hafford, Bexley Partnership manager, said: "This morning's operation illustrates that we will always, where appropriate and in partnership with specialist units, take robust action to tackle criminality in Bexley, regardless of where it occurs.

"We know the site visited today houses a well-established travelling community who should not have to live with criminals in their midst.

"These strong community links enable us to target criminality without criminalising or alienating particular communities, the vast majority of whom are law-abiding citizens."
