When artist Ian Morrison saw the winning model for the Ebbsfleet landmark project - popularly christened the Angel of the South - he was not impressed.

Mark Wallinger’s giant statue of a white horse will tower 164ft in the Kent countryside and will cost £2 million.

Mr Morrison, from Wingham, said: “The white horse is the symbol of Kent but everyone in the county knows it should be a rampant one.

“Mark Wallinger’s horse, with its four hooves on the ground, has nothing to do with Kent.

“The more I thought about this the more annoyed I became so one day I decided to make an alternative model from wood."

Mr Morrison, a self-taught artist, specialises in carving and has made many wooden sculptures and furniture and has done lots of carvings for churches.

He took his wooden model to Canterbury firm Parker Steel, who cut and gave him enough metal to make two scale model versions.
