Welling equalled the Blue Square Bet South record for consecutive league wins following a 1-0 victory at Basingstoke.

Their latest win, on Saturday, came courtesy of Ross Lafayette’s first half strike.

Welling survived a late penalty scare, as Basingstoke failed to convert in the final minute.

Victory leaves Welling six points behind leaders Salisbury but, crucially, with two games in hand.

Basingstoke were in form themselves prior to Saturday’s clash, as they had won their previous three fixtures.

And Welling keeper Sam Mott - buoyed by his recent Enfland C call-up - had to be alert to save from Tim Sills early on and then block Jide Ogunbote’s effort moments later.

The visitors were forced into making an early change, as Kurtis Guthrie went off with a gash to the knee, moments after hitting a shot against the post.

Welling took the lead against the run of play with Lafayette (pictured) firing home on the turn, after being picked out by Guthrie’s replacement Kiernan Hughes-Mason. Home keeper Ashley Bayes made a good save to deny the same player a second goal.

Basingstoke had the chance to level the scores in the last minute, from the penalty spot, after Delano Sam-Yorke was brought down in the box by Fraser Franks but Wes Daly hit the post with his 12-yard effort.
