Beauty and the Beast - The Verdict

Take more than 200 people, most of whom have no theatrical experience at all, and build a musical around them. Young or old, tall or short, talented or not, everyone can be in this show.

Sounds like madness? You would think so but the production of Beauty and the Beast at the Central Theatre, Chatham just about pulls it off.

The logistics of putting on a show like this must be incredible, particularly sorting out costumes for a cast that truly does come in all shapes and sizes.

Some of the performers, it has to be confessed, looked as though they had stumbled on to an alien planet while others appeared as though they were born to be on stage but they all radiated enthusiasm and enjoyment.

The professional cast is headed by former boyband star Antony Costa who is still fondly remembered by fans of boyband Blue.

Presenter Barney Harwood draws on his years of experience in children’s TV by quickly developing a rapport with the younger members of the audience. His character, Jangles the Jester, is the link character for the show, much as Buttons would be in Cinderella.

Quite often, this character is played as a fun-filled powerhouse but Barney opted for a cheeky nonchalance instead which seemed popular with the youngsters, including my six-year-old son who swiftly decided that Jangles was his favourite character.

The ever-reliable Claire Huckle makes an effective Beauty and, not content with having to organise this massive on-stage effort, director Jack Edwards somehow finds time to play Beauty’s dad.

Beauty and the Beast continues at the Central Theatre, Chatham until Sunday, April 13. Tickets from £14 for adults and £11 for children. Call 01634 338338.
