The family of a Medway woman kidnapped and beheaded in India say they are determined her killers will be brought to justice.

Mother-of-three Surjit Kaur - a British citizen who lived in a flat in Clover Street, Chatham - was killed on a visit to the Punjab region of her homeland.

The 67-year-old's family are struggling to come to terms with her brutal death.

Surjit, who had been a UK resident for about 50 years, went on one of her many trips to India in February, but went missing from her son's holiday home at the end of March.

After getting an emergency visa to visit India, one of her sons, Baljinder, flew out only to discover his mother's body had been found.

The father-of-two said: "She was beheaded. It was brutal, such a shock to be told that when I got off the plane.

"Her body was in a different state and was brought back and a funeral service was held, which happened before I arrived."

However, Baljinder was able to arrange a memorial service for his mother and will hold another at the Sikh temple in Byron Road, Gillingham, later.

The Indian authorities have charged two men with murder and kidnap, but Mr Singh is frightened the pair might not be punished.

The accused men are distant relatives of Baljinder's family, but he has no idea why his mother was killed.

Baljinder, 40, added: "My mum was a kind-hearted lady and often helped out the poor. I am worried as it is so corrupt in India - they may not go through a trial.

"We want the trial to go smoothly and need pressure from the British authorities to make sure that happens."

The family have contacted Gillingham and Rainham MP Rehman Chishti, who has promised to take up the case with the Foreign Office.
