Ten fire engines were called to scene of a serious blaze on an industrial estate.

The fire broke out in a plastic recyling centre on the Medway City Estate in Strood in the early hours of this morning.

The blaze happened on the first floor of the Viridor building in Clipper Close at around 2am.

Fire crew and a height vehicle were sent, while firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used main jets to tackle the fire, which was extinguished just after 4am.

Viridor spokesman Lisa Templeton said: "A fire was reported at Viridor’s Rochester Plastics Recycling Facility at 2.15am

"Staff alerted the fire service and immediately implemented site safety procedures, evacuating the plant.

"There were no injuries and the fire service had extinguished the blaze two hours later at 4.15am, remaining on site to monitor the situation.

"The cause of the fire is being investigated. Viridor is grateful to the fire service, which initially had 10 fire engines at the plant, for its assistance.

"Viridor has tankers at the recycling facility to collect and remove any liquid associated with fire-fighting efforts."

The plastics recycling plant will remain closed today to allow the company to assess the damage.

Crews left the scene just before midday successfully dealing with the blaze.

The cause hasn't been confirmed.
