A series of missed chances combined with sloppy defending saw Blue Square Bet South leaders Welling suffer their second defeat in three games on Monday.

The Wings paid the penalty for giving away two spot-kicks amid bad decision at the back while their normally prolific strikeforce had a night to forget.

Top scorer Andy Pugh had already gone close by the time Jack Oberstellar's unwise pass back into the danger zone gifted possession to David Bryant and he was tripped in the box by Ben Martin. Darren Currie tucked away the 12th-minute spot-kick to pure Wood ahead.

Welling took a while to get going by they should have led by half-time. Pugh created space but sent his trademark right-foot curler over the bar, Luis Cumbers repeated the trick when he should have scored and then the latter charged down a clearance to create a golden opportunity, only to somehow drag his shot wide of the upright.

At the other end, Welling were grateful to keeper Dan Thomas (pictured) who saved smartly from Sam Lechmere to prevent him doubling Wood's lead.

Welling pressed the self-destruct button 10 minutes into the second half as one ball over the top sent Bryant clear and he was fouled by Thomas despite getting in a shot at goal.

Somehow, the referee decided only to show a yellow card but it mattered little as Currie sent Thomas the wrong way from the penalty spot.

Currie then fluffed his lines for a hat-trick goal after Anthony Acheampong's miskick.

Welling pulled one back with 20 minutes left, Ben Martin heading in from close range and they then piled on the pressure without creating too many clear-cut openings.

Several corners were cleared to safety while the challenges flew in from both sides late on as the referee threatened to lose control.
