A TRUE community spirit from its shopkeepers has won Chartham the Kent Business Village of the Year title. The village's three shops, Chartham Village Store (Costcutter),in Station Road, the Shalmsford Street Post Office and The News Centre, Shalmsford Street, all contributed to the award.

Parish councillor Veronica Litten said that Brian and Donna Curry, who run the post office, picked up pensioners from outlying areas who were without transport in order for them to collect their money. Both Mr and Mrs Curry and Shailesh and Rita Dixit, of the village store, deliver goods.

"Costcutters and the post office both co-operate with all village events and give prizes if approached - they are always generous," said Mrs Litten.

"All the parish shopkeepers make an extra effort. George and June Sims, of the News Centre, deliver newspapers and help where they can."

Mr Dixit said he and his family always tried to raise money for charity every Christmas and last year donated £700 to the Kent Kids Miles of Smiles charity. Mr and Mrs Curry said it was nice to know their efforts were appreciated.

A Shop Local campaign was held in Chartham in June. Mrs Litten said the Ashford Road trading estate was well-kept and contributed to the award.

The Chartham Society always approaches new businesses and operates a commercial membership scheme. "We had a festival on the village green in June and invited Costcutters and the post office to participate," added Mrs Litten. "At that time Costcutters couldn't take part, but the post office had a stand and organised a painting competition."

The awards are organised by the Kent Rural Community Council and sponsored by Calor Gas and the Kent Reliance Building Society.
