Kent firms are being urged to tap into a pot of European cash to help them make their debut in cross-Channel markets.

Kent County Council has secured a £360,000 grant that could support up to 125 small and medium sized businesses in taking their first steps to overseas business.

The programme will enable companies to take part in activities such as trade missions, trade fairs and information seminars.

KCC Cabinet Member for International Relations Alex King said: "This is a great opportunity for Kent companies to grow their business.

The cross-Channel markets are on our doorstep and they are a good place for local businesses to try expanding their activities.

"With the help of European funding, our companies could capitalise on the county's gateway location, and at the same time give the Kent economy a welcome boost."

Meanwhile, another project Netforce 2 - involving Business Support Kent, the University of Kent, KCC and various French partners from Upper Normandy - was awarded £338,000 to boost business support services across the county.

It is based on lessons from the Continent and will focus on women and older people looking to become entrepreneurs.
