A NEW carriage driving club is being launched at Wittersham near Ashford with rides around the village on Sunday for youngsters who want to try their hand at something different.

Barry Cheesmur of Witterhsham Coachworks and Sylvia Marshall, have both been involved with driving for the disabled. Now they are aiming to give young people over the age of 12 years, the chance to learn how to steer a pony and trap.

He has Welsh Cobs and she has ponies and they have harness and carriages. The day is being sponsored by Tillings Interiors. Mr Cheesmur said: "It is an expensive sport and regarded as quite exclusive because of the Royal connections, so we want to start a club to give interested youngsters the chance to try it.

"We are affiliated to the national association and we will be running a mini cone competition in the field at Mumford's Stables in Swan Street, with a barbecue.

"We will drive around the village from around 10.45am and have invited other clubs along. If anyone would like to come down, please give a ring so that we will know how many to expect." He can be contacted on 01797 270384.
