A controversial change to the way customers pay for parking at railway stations has been postponed after a backlash from commuters.

Last week Southeastern announced it will be converting 45 of its car parks at 38 stations across the county to an ANPR system by August 19.

The change would have meant passengers would have to pay for parking via an app rather than at payment booths or vending machines.

The new system would have recorded number plates upon entering the car park removing the needed to display a ticket.

However, the company has now decided to postpone the change.

In a statement issued yesterday ( August 15), Southeastern said: “We have been reviewing customer feedback and it is clear the decision has caused some concern.

"Therefore, we have now taken the decision to pause the changes in car parking payments for a few months while we increase the options to help everyone continue to pay for their parking.

"In the meantime, all existing methods of payment will continue."
