Chris Solly

Your 21st birthday is supposed to be a big day and last Friday I got the present I wanted when I signed a new contract with Charlton.

Life couldn’t get much better for me at the moment. We’re top of the league after another great performance and win against Sheffield United on Saturday, I’ve got a new deal with the club until 2014 and I also recently found out that I’m being considered for the Great Britain football team at the Olympic Games.

The club received a letter out of the blue saying that I was on the long list of GB manager Stuart Pearce and asking if I was interested in being in the squad. I quickly said yes, so now it’s just a case of waiting to see what happens.

If I was to make it, I would be over the moon. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I’m told that the long list has 191 names, so there is a long way to go yet but just to be recognised in that group is a pleasure and a privilege.

It’s an under-23 competition, with three over-age players permitted in each squad, and I’m told I will know in March whether I’ve made the shortlist before the final squad is announced in July.

The matches are being played at Old Trafford, Wembley Stadium and the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, so that would be another fantastic experience, even though I was actually one of the first players to play at the new Wembley, for England under-17s.

The Olympics is unbelievable and the entire country is going to be mad about it, so it would be great if I was involved.

That said, it’s not something I’ve thought about much because we cannot allow our focus to shift from our target, which is promotion.

It was another great win on Saturday. We might not have been at our flowing best but we stood up to United and earned another valuable win. We are answering every question asked of us at the moment and long may that continue.

Johnnie Jackson scored another amazing free-kick, which was arguably better than the winner against Sheffield Wednesday seven days previously.

I’m enjoying going out and playing in every game this season and we have developed a good partnership between the back four and the goalkeeper.

I had a good pre-season and I’ve since just been taking each game as it comes and trying to do my best to keep my place for the next game.
