Given that we pride ourselves on our defending, last Saturday’s defeat to Notts County was hard to take.
We still have one of the meanest defences in all of the four divisions but having started last week only behind then Premier League leaders Manchester City in terms of goals conceded per game, the first-half was a bit of a nightmare.
No side should be 4-0 down at half-time, least of all the league leaders.
Of course, we showed what was possible in the second-half when we pulled two goals back but there was not really any satisfaction at that feat at the end of the game. We knew that it wasn’t good enough and the manager was fully justified to let rip at us at half-time.
Since the game, we’ve spoken about it in depth, and analysed a few things but it’s important not to dwell on such things.
There are many, many more games when things have gone well for us this season, so we shouldn’t focus overmuch on one bad half.
We may have suffered two home defeats in a row but the loss to County certainly contrasted with the previous loss to Colchester, when most people would agree that we dominated the game.
We have to get back to dominating sides, particularly at home, and cut out any sloppiness.
The results certainly took the shine off my return to Bournemouth at the start of the month, when we earned a club record 13th away league win of the season.
I’ve kept in touch with a lot of the lads at Bournemouth and still have a good relationship with them.
I’m still not sure how my departure was any different to anyone else’s but I was booed by their fans throughout the match.
In my eyes, that tells me that they didn’t want me to go.
I like to think that I took things in my stride but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be and it wasn’t as bad as when we played them at The Valley on the opening day of the season.
We’re back on the road at Scunthorpe on Saturday and desperate to get back into action and putting points on the board again. Scunthorpe are fighting for their lives at the bottom of the table and will be difficult opponents but we have to ensure that last week was just a ‘blip’ and that we resume our push for promotion.
