Chris Whelpdale still hoping Gillingham can reach League 2 play-offs

Chris Whelpdale admits that all Gillingham can do now is hope for the best after their play-off aims got no better despite Saturday’s victory over Swindon.
Two wins from their final two games will give the Gills a chance of making it, but two-goal hero Whelpdale knows they still need others to falter.
"Anything can happen in this league," said the 25-year-old (pictured). "We just have to keep getting the points ourselves, win our last two games and then we have to hope the other teams slip up. That’s all we can do now.
"All we have to think about now is getting those six points. We need to make sure we bring the points home from Northampton (on Saturday) and then beat Morecambe here (next week)."
Whelpdale scored two goals in one game for the first time in his career on Saturday and was thrilled to have played a major role in Gills’ win.
It took the midfielder’s goal tally for the season to 12.
"It was great," he said. "The manager wanted us to start brightly, get in their faces and put pressure on them. We did that and it showed that we are capable of competing with the top teams in this league.
"I didn’t start the season very well but second half I have been enjoying it. I’ve been scoring goals and I am pleased with how I am playing.
"I set a target of 10 goals at the start of the season and I am happy to have beaten it."
