Kent could be hit by a week-long Siberian cold and snow blast dubbed the 'Beast from the East'.

Residents are set to feel the wintry effects of some high pressure which is building in Scandinavia, making the county potentially the coldest place in England next week.

It is expected to draw down cold air in Siberia.

It will then gradually move across Europe, reaching the south east of England and Kent on Sunday and Monday.

It's predicted to be one of the coldest spells Kent has seen since the nationwide freeze of January 1987, which left the country snowbound for a week, with temperatures of -10C.

Operational meteorologist at the Met Office, Martin Bowles, said: "Some very cold weather is due at the end of this week and next week.

"Kent will be one of the coldest places in England at the beginning of next week, with temperatures hardly reaching 0C in the middle of the day.

"There's going to be snow showers coming through with this cold weather."

Speaking exclusively to KentOnline, Mr Bowles said we can expect some travel disruption.

"Travel disruption is likely. There is going to be some strong winds. We would expect some disruption to road, rail and air transport," he added.

Wind speeds of 20mph are expected throughout next week with gusts of up to 30mph.
