THE Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, returned to his roots as a parish priest when he took a service in the village of Otham, near Maidstone.

He joined the Rev Andrew Sewell, rector of Otham with Langley, in leading a parish communion at St Nicholas Church.

In his sermon, Dr Williams, 55, revealed that he enjoyed watching the Dr Who television series with his 10-year old.

After the service, he chatted to the congregation of around 100 and joined them for refreshments. He was also presented with a small wooden cross carved from a churchyard cherry tree that fell in a storm.

Mr Sewell was delighted that the Archbishop had chosen to visit the parish.

"It was a great privilege and honour," he said. "The Archbishop has a heavy schedule and we were very pleased he made time to come to Otham."
