Teenage defender Connor Essam is in talks with Gillingham over a new deal.

Essam (pictured) has been a revelation in the heart of the Gills' defence ever since breaking into the first team in February.

His current deal expires in the summer and he is free to talk with other clubs.

His form has prompted the Gills to begin talks with the player now.

"We want him to stay and I think he wants to stay," said Gills boss Andy Hessenthaler.

"He has been a big bonus for us over the last few months. He has taken his time to get an opportunity but he has taken it.

"He has been really consistent and we are really pleased with him. It is important we get these boys tied up because they are the future of the football club."

Essam had a brief spell at Dartford over Christmas before being brought back to the club because of an injury-crisis.

"We brought him back and the rest is history," Hessenthaler said. "He has done himself the world of good and he has been a pleasure to work with. He is getting better every game and the more he plays the more he learns.

"At the weekend, both he and Frampton did well. Frampton organises and talks to Connor and that is what he needs and he loves that. I have been really pleased with Connor and hopefully he will be here for the future."

It is likely that the Gills will also be taking up an option of a further season on Jack Evans' contract after he also impressed when given the chance.
