SUPT STEVE BRIGHTMAN: "This callous act is quite simply unforgivable.."

A WOMAN in her 80s was pushed to the ground and suffered a factured hip when she was mugged by a robber as she walked towards a bus stop.

Police say the pensioner was approach by the robber in a residential car park in St Albans Close, Gillingham.

As the robber grabbed her bag a struggle began and she was pushed over. The attacker raced off and was chased by a passer-by who witnessed the incident but he lost him in nearby Church Street.

Police conducted a thorough search of the area but without success. They are now appealing for information about the incident that occurred between 1.45pm and 2pm on Wednesday, December 20.

The mugger is described as a white male in his early 20s, around 6ft tall with dark hair. He was wearing a black jacket and white trousers.

Supt Steve Brightman, of Medway Police, said: "As a result of the robbery this woman has suffered a broken hip and is undergoing hospital treatment.

"This callous act is quite simply unforgivable and we are asking for anyone who may have any knowledge of this crime to get in contact with Kent Police.

"I would urge those with information to consider the impact that this incident has had on the woman and her family. She has suffered a painful and serious injury, all for a handbag that contained £30."

"We have launched a full investigation and will do everything in our power to arrest and charge the person responsible for this cowardly act."

Anyone who can assist police with the investigation, is asked to telephone officers on 01634 792528 or call Kent CrimeStoppers, free and in confidence, on 0800 555111.
