Myles Weston’s second-half winner maintained Gillingham’s 100 per cent record with a hard-earned win in rainy East London on Saturday.
Torrential rain, thunder and lightning added to a rousing League 2 contest at the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham Stadium.
Weston (pictured) struck with a low left-foot finish just after the hour, racing onto a Matt Fish clearance, bursting into box, and shooting through the legs of Daggers keeper Chris Lewington.
Substitute Danny Kedwell, just on in a double switch made by boss Martin Allen, was unmarked in acres of space but chose to go it alone and score his second goal for the club.
Kedwell might have made it 3-1 with 18 minutes left, but Lewington blocked his effort with a low save inside the box.
However it was all hands to the pumps at the end as the Daggers went close, skipper Abu Ogogo having one effort saved and heading another narrowly wide.
Two goals in two minutes lit up the first half, Deon Burton heading in his first goal for the Gills on the half-hour, only for the lively Dwight Gayle to put the home side level from the spot after Stuart Nelson was booked for flooring him in the box.
Fish made Burton’s opener with a low cross, which Burton headed past Lewington from six yards. Nelson had already kept out two fierce efforts before Gills went in front but he then gave away the spot-kick by bringing down Gayle, with the Dagenham striker stepping up to score.
